The sisterhood of missing pants: Harper's Bazaar India breaks down the pantless trend

We throw light on the bottomless moments from red carpets and more!

Harper's Bazaar India

Whether you are a movie buff or not, there’s no escaping one of the biggest nights of the global entertainment industry—the Oscars. It’s where you want to look for some of the best fashion and beauty inspirations. And this year, there was an extra dose of magic on the red carpet and at the after-party. From America Ferrera in a custom Versace gown and Emma Stone in a Louis Vuitton peplum gown to Jennifer Lawrence in a revived sheer gown from Givenchy, celebrities pulled out all the stops.

However, the one look that caught our attention was Margot Robbie’s vintage Muglar S/S 96 moment at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party. Robbie's shiny, pantsless look stood out with its super-snatched wasit and confetti-like, almost iridescent beads.

It’s safe to say that the pantsless trend has been in the spotlight for quite some time now. From the streets to runways to red carpets, celebrities have been ditching their bottoms any chance they get. It first started cropping up on our feeds in 2022, when Kylie Jenner wore a pair of white briefs while attending the Loewe show at Paris Fashion Week.

After this, we saw Hollywood’s IT girls forgoing their pants everywhere we looked. Images of Hailey Beiber in a long coat and high-waisted black briefs, Bella Hadid walking about in a pair of white undies and mini Ugg boots, and, of course, Kendall Jenner’s numerous pantsless moments began flooding our feed. And while we are just talking about celebrities up and about, this trend has shown up on numerous runways over the years. Leading us to believe that, in no way, it has died down.

And if you need more proof (honestly, after Robbie’s shimmering no-pants look, we don’t see why you would, but okay), more recently, Sydney Sweeney attended the Miu Miu autumn/winter 2024 show at Paris Fashion Week in white underwear that was completely embellished with sliver sequins and beads. But that is not all. A few days ago, Kristen Stewart opted for a black bodysuit minus any bottoms for the premiere of her movie, Love Lies Bleeding.

We spoke to Lovedeep Gulyani, a costume designer and stylist, who said, “Designers on the runway have been experimenting from short to almost no pants. The likes of Miu Miu and Anderson at Loewe are putting forward micro underwear like shorts. It’s a daring look, and it’s refreshing to see how the casual no-pants look is embraced on red carpets as well.”

Here are some images of celebrities following the pantsless trend:
