Mastering the cocktail dress code: a guide to perfecting the look

Expert advice to help you find the perfect cocktail attire for any occasion.

Harper's Bazaar India

Navigating a cocktail dress code can be challenging. You need to rise to the occasion without going over the top, aiming for elegance without being too formal. Whether attending a Christmas party, a winter wedding or a sophisticated work event, success lies in understanding the ins and outs of cocktail attire to ensure the perfect ensemble.

The 'cocktail' dress code originated in the 1920s, when women began enjoying more freedoms, and a dress code became necessary for the many soirées on the Roaring Twenties' agenda. It called for a blend of daytime dressing and formal evening attire, with knee-length or just-below-the-knee dresses made from satin, velvet and silk so that partygoers could move with ease.

Today, the look isn’t much different. The emphasis is still on achieving a balance of elegance and ease, with shorter hemlines remaining a hallmark of the cocktail dress code. Glamorous yet wearable fabrics continue to be key, and the importance of tailoring is as strong as ever.

To dive deeper into cocktail attire today, we asked stylist Tom Eerebout—who has worked with the likes of Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue and Austin Butler—to share his expertise. Here, he reveals the dos and don’ts of cocktail party dressing for the season ahead.

The Bazaar guide to mastering a cocktail dress code

What is the best way to approach a cocktail dress code?

"Think of it as an evening look that doesn’t try too hard—cocktail dressing is about achieving relaxed elegance. The key is comfort and confidence, so choose what makes you feel at ease.

For me, it's often a suit with a loose tank top or nothing underneath—formal yet casual. Opt for versatile pieces, simplify your look, and stay true to your everyday style for a naturally polished vibe."

Does a cocktail dress code mean only dresses?

"Not at all. The key is sharp, structured pieces that exude refinement and sophistication."

Is there anything to avoid?

"Avoid anything too casual. Cocktail attire should feel comfortable but still stylish—think relaxed pieces with a refined edge that keep you looking effortlessly put-together."

Is there a rule about length?

"There are no strict rules on length, but when it comes to dresses, avoid anything floor-length to steer clear of a black-tie vibe. Aim for chic and practical—nothing that sweeps the floor."

Are heels essential?

"Heels make all the difference—even a small one. They instantly elevate the outfit, add a boost of confidence, and bring that extra bit of poise."

What about accessories?

"It’s all in the accessories: a timeless piece of jewellery, a great shoe or a statement evening bag. The little things are what will make your look all come together. Jewellery should be understated yet elegant—focus on subtle details that add charm without stealing the show. When it comes to handbags, a sleek clutch or small handbag for your essentials is always wise. This season, rich, subdued colours are having their moment: think deep burgundies, forest greens, warm browns, and mustards. And of course, every wardrobe should be anchored by a few solid neutrals in classic shades like grey or nude. They’re timeless staples that complement any outfit."

Are there any insider hacks to instantly elevate an outfit?

"For me, looking polished starts with choosing 100% organic fabrics. High-quality materials elevate your entire look, giving you that refined, effortless vibe, even on days when you’re not feeling your best. The other tip is to avoid buying items just because you love how they look on the rack. I often see people making this mistake instead of picking pieces that actually flatter them. Choose what makes you look and feel incredible. It’s all about showcasing your best self, not just following trends."
