Is corduroy the new denim? Here’s how to style the fabric of the moment

If someone played a game of word association with corduroy, then boring, retro, basic might come up. Trending? Celeb-favourite? Stylish? Probably not. Yet, corduroy clothing is making its way back after being relegated as something that is too kitschy and impractical. 

Corduroy, much like denim, has working-class roots and its origins are closely woven with the anti-establishment movement of the 1970s, the decade when the fabric surged in popularity and became a part of mainstream fashion. Since then, it has repeatedly fallen in and out of style, and now, has made a promising return not just in pants form, but in everything from miniskirts to shoulder bags. 

It’s no surprise that corduroy is having a moment, with even celebs like Hailey Bieber, Khushi Kapoor, Kendall Jenner among others donning the fabric in their public outings. And for good reason, it can be styled in an unlimited number of ways and has a vintage appeal. 

Plus, it’s the perfect fabric for cold weather. It is durable, heavyweight, doesn’t lose its stretch or colour like denim, and is thick enough to keep you warm even on chilly days. Add to this the fact that the cosy ribbed material isn’t as bulky as faux fur, leather, or wool, meaning it is a breeze to layer with.

Wear them in place of your favourite denims

If you’ve got bored of wearing your go-to denims and have run out of ways to style them in a fresh way, reach out for the pair of corduroy pants that have been lying at the back of your closet. They are endlessly adaptable and will look good both dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. 

Opt for a versatile mini skirt

Mini skirts are making a strong comeback thanks to the obsession with Y2K era fashion, so how about combining two trends in the form of a cute and classic corduroy mini skirt? Pick one in a shade that can be easily matched with your other outfits—think navy, black, or a deep brown. Worn with a plain crop top, an oversized leather jacket, sneakers and plenty of jewellery, it’s the ultimate look that we think is the fashion equivalent of  “no make-up make-up ”. 

Add a blazer to the mix

Structured blazers can instantly make any outfit look elegant and put-together, and a textured, corduroy one will surely add a layer of interest to your look. Instead of black, go for a chocolate or chestnut-coloured one and pair it with light denims or white trousers and simple boots for a sleek result.

Taking inspiration from the daring denim-on-denim look, you can wear a corduroy co-ord set, or a simple corduroy dress. You could also mix and match different corduroy pieces from your wardrobe if you want to go for a look that is less monochrome and subtler. Pair classic brown corduroy trousers with a pink corduroy shirt and a sweater vest, completing the outfit with black loafers and your favourite neutral-toned trench coat for the ideal fall-winter look.
