When it comes to power dressing, few attires are as impactful as a three-piece suit. This combination, comprising a vest, jacket, and trousers can be worn with or without a shirt underneath. Dress it up with a pocket square or metal brooch for a formal evening, or dress it down with a pair of sneakers. Recently, several Indian actresses have rocked this staple, but getting the formula right can sometimes be tricky. So, we speak to celebrity stylists to give tips on how to nail a three-piece suit.

What sets a three-piece suit apart?

“It is a classic investment,” says Sana Anver, who has been a part of the styling team for Indian actresses Sonam Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar. While three-piece suits used to be relegated to black-tie events before, more people are choosing to rock them even on casual occasions. ‘Office Siren’ and ‘Corpcore’ trends sent the sales of all formalwear such as oversized blazers and crisp pencil skirts skyrocketing this year, but a three-piece suit has unmatched charm.

Elevate a boring suit

A pinstripe vest, jacket, and trousers can make you stand out among a sea of black and white suits. Anver suggests styling it with playful accessories like ’90s shades, a chunky chain necklace, or a pair of pumps. “One can go with a contrast waistcoat inside to create a statement or a monotone look for an uber-chic vibe,” says Amandeep Kaur who often styles Vicky Kaushal and Taapsee Pannu. Suits are generally designed in neutral tones like black, white, grey, beige, navy, and tan. But how about experimenting with colours? Kaur’s favourites are chocolate brown or deep olive. These tints can help your formalwear make a statement.

Adding a personal touch

Some people might argue that a three-piece suit comes in limited varieties and there is less room for creative expression. The answer to this is accessories. Anver says shoes play a critical role, “Pick from stilettos, sneakers, or a classic pair of pumps, that best express your personal style as anything elevates the three-piece suit.” Kaur suggests considering a variety of pocket squares—from solid ones that match the suit to vibrant, printed ones that offer a balance and match your mood and personality.
