Every year in April, the Coachella Valley near Los Angeles and our social media feeds collectively come alive, thanks to one of the biggest music festivals taking place in the desert over two weekends. While the line-up each year features the crème de la crème of the music industry, the fashion at Coachella gets just as much screen time and is usually a strong indicator of the upcoming summer trends.
Ahead, we scoured the internet to trace the emerging trends from the ongoing festival that deserve a spot in your wardrobe this season.
Metallic accents and lots of shimmer
Metallics and music festivals go hand-in-hand; it's the perfect time to wear that over-the-top shimmering outfit without sticking out like a sore thumb. This year too, everyone from the performers to the attendees wore shiny attires. While Sabrina Carpenter opted for a slightly subdued, mostly monotone sequined top, mini skirt, and leather jacket combo, Lana Del Ray went for an all-out sparkling dress. Take a page out of their book and don’t be afraid to experiment with a sequined top or dress for a night out this season.
Tassels, cowboy hats, and boots
Coachella’s desert setting often means a spike in Western-inspired outfits at the festival. This year, the trend has reached a fever pitch with everyone from celebrities like Nina Dobrev to influencers like Leonie Hanne embracing the aesthetic. But Western fashion is seeing a renaissance in 2024, mostly due to Byeoncé’s country album ‘Cowboy Carter’, which came out last month. Hop onto the trend by swapping your regular sneakers for stylish cowboy boots. But if you’d rather pick something that is more weather-friendly, a cowboy hat to keep the heat away is a great idea. If you’d like to go a step further, add a fringed shirt or a tasselled skirt and you’re good to go!
Plenty of sheer
From red carpets to music festivals, the allure of sheer continues to grow, and its strong presence among Coachella’s fashionable crowd is proof. While actress Lili Reinhart wore a daring co-ord set featuring a white sheer skirt and shirt paired with a matching bikini top and bottoms, others in the crowd opted for mesh skirts, sheer shirts, and more. With soaring temperatures this season, sheer clothing is an excellent way to look chic and cool.
All things cottage-core
Flouncy midi and maxi dresses in cute floral prints also made a heavy appearance at the festival’s opening weekend. For the past two years, cottage-core has been a steady trend, and it doesn’t seem to be going out of fashion anytime soon. Pick a breezy summer dress in a pastel shade or one with a dainty floral print and pair it with ballet flats and delicate accessories to nail the look. Alternatively, for a hint of grunge, swap the flats in favour of ankle-high black boots.
Crochet chic
Shakira wore a fiery ombré yellow-red knit dress for her performance, but it was not the only knit or crochet outfit that was spotted at the festival. American socialite and actress Karrueche Tran sported a white crochet mini-dress paired with white knee-high cowboy boots. Crocheted attire was a favourite with other festival-goers too. To ace the look, try a crocheted vest over a plain white tee and finish the outfit with your go-to pair of shorts and sneakers.
