Best games for your New Year party

It isn't a party if it isn't a party filled with games

Harper's Bazaar India

We’re just a few days away before we bid adieu to 2022 and say hello to 2023. Plans for the 31st have already started with Whatsapp groups titled ‘31st plan’ flooded with messages. While you’ve got the food, music and drinks in order, it’s time to make your house party a memorable one for your friends and guests by playing a host of theme games. There’s no better way to bring out the competitive spirit in the room.

Here are some fun games that will get everyone involved from the get go.

Catch Phrase

Here’s a fast-paced game for your friends and family. Designed for 4 or more players, this device-enabled game requires one team to guess the word on the device and be the first to get seven in total. To win a point, don’t get caught with the device once the 60-second timer on it runs out. The game offers variety as you have 5 categories to choose from—entertainment, everyday life, fun and games, the world and variety. What follows is a word appearing on the display and you having to give clues. If you break the rules, the other team gets a point. The round also ends when the time has elapsed. How’s that for a fun 31st night?

Cards against Humanity

I remember playing this game for the first time at a bar in New York and being hooked within seconds. Not just that, it made me realise that I could laugh non-stop for more than 10 minutes. I love this game so much that writing about it makes me want to buy a set for my New Year’s Party. It’s great to come out of your comfort zone once in a while and Cards against humanity is that game that turns even the most silent of introverts into a social butterfly resulting in hours and hours of fun. What makes this game one of the easiest to play is how simple it is. Each round sees one player ask a question from a black card and everyone else answers with their funniest white card.

Sequence

I love things that don’t take much time to catch my attention. I remember seeing the picture of this game on a friend’s Instagram story and immediately wanted to know what it was and how does one play it. If you’re looking for a game that’s fun and also one that teaches you a lot about life—strategy, how to think logically, act cautiously, think and plan ahead, and most importantly how to win, then this is it. This card game involves a player to draw out a card from their hand and place a chip on a corresponding space on the board. When you make five in a row, what you get is a sequence. The goal of the game is to score the required number of five-card sequences before their opponents.

Spot It!

Here’s a fun, clever, portable game that you can play anytime and anywhere with your friends, family and loved ones. With fun symbols and pictures on every card (each card having exactly one matching symbol or picture in common with the other cards in the deck) it’s time to put your observational skills and lightning-fast reflexes to the ultimate test as you spot matching symbols. Be it kids, or adults, here’s a game that’s thoroughly enjoyed for its engaging, and tactile game play.

Twister

Add a twist of fun to a party or family night with the classic game that ties players up in knots! One person gives the spinner a whirl–see what's next as players try to keep their hands and feet on the mat. Right foot, red! Who can do it? Left foot green–who's got it? If a player's knee or elbow touches the mat or falls over, they're out. The last player standing wins.
