Hailey Bieber on 2024 beauty resolutions, cold plunging, and cleansing rules to live by

The model discusses her New Year's beauty goals and what to expect from Rhode in 2024.

Harper's Bazaar India

From setting make-up trends, to dictating the season’s most covetable haircuts and colours, Hailey Bieber is proven to be a force in the modern beauty-sphere. The 27-year-old model and Rhode founder has reinvented the wheel when it comes to sparking beauty movements; her 'boy bob' juxtaposed with 'glazed' everything (glossy veils via her skin, nails, lips...) populated social media all last year—and, indeed, still do now. Sugar plum frosts, sunburnt blush and cinnamon butter hair glazes are all embedded in Bieber's beauty regime, and dutifully reflected by her loyal following.

Despite her ever-evolving make-up aesthetic, the model's everyday skincare approach remains consistently pared back; an ideology that she shares openly and heroes via Rhode. If you’re not familiar already, you can rely on the brand for curated formulas of everyday basics, all with one cohesive barrier-protection ethos. Earning a whopping 945 million views on TikTok, Bieber has unwaveringly proven that her minimalist range is much more than just another celebrity beauty brand.

But while Bieber's skin may be flawless—making her the perfect ambassador for her own brand—Rhode has maintained a vested interest in showcasing real skin textures through its campaigns.

“I don’t believe that only showing amazing skin is what we’re committed to as a brand. I know that I have amazing skin and I do my best to be super upfront with how much commitment goes into that,” she tells me. “But I want there to be transparency and for people to feel like their skin is being represented.”

Here Bieber tells us more about her skincare strategies for 2024, and what else we can expect from her and Rhode this year....

Harper's Bazaar: Do you have any 2024 beauty resolutions?

Hailey Bieber: I'd like to take more risks with beauty and make-up and explore a little bit more. I'm at the point where I know what works for me; I have my basic, day-to-day, everyday glam nailed down. So I'd love to push it forward in the new year and have more fun with it and try more things. Just explore. I really felt like I started to do that last year and it was so much fun.

HB: What make-up trends are you taking into 2024?

HB: I love leaning more and more into the beauty of the '90s. The little bit of grunge around eyes, but no skin. I'm very into those kind of vibes.

HB: Who is on your beauty moodboard?

HB: I am constantly saving photos of Kate Moss. There's something that I feel is so magnetic about her and her beauty. She has transcended multiple periods of time. I just love the unevenness of her look. You know, so effortless, so carefree. She's forever going to be a muse for sure.

HB: How does it feel to be on so many beauty moodboards yourself?

HB: It's very flattering. To be able to connect with other people through beauty or clothing or hair, whatever it may be, is really fun. I've really enjoyed submerging myself into this beauty community. There are so many amazing people on TikTok and Instagram and so many amazing creators that I've been able to meet and to talk to. Even just watching their videos to see how they use their creativity and their point of view has impacted me in a lot of ways.

HB: What wellness rituals are you into right now?

HB: It's kind of the same as last year. I still love cold plunging, I love saunas. Lymphatic massage is probably going to be the thing I live by forever. You asked about beauty resolutions and I think that even with wellness I'd like to explore more and be open to trial and error of different things that could make me feel better and improve my sleep. How can I improve my health? I'm very committed to that.

HB: You're very committed to your skincare routine, too. How long does it usually take?

HB: If my skin is irritated and flared up, my skincare routine is a lot faster because I'm just doing something very simple—which is typically just cleansing and a little moisturiser. But, sometimes I have nights where I want to take a bit more time for myself, put on a mask, maybe do a treatment. A more thought-out routine. That's when I'm taking a night to get in the bath. My routine is really never that crazy or that extensive. It's just sometimes I might have more steps than others.

HB: What is your number one skincare tip?

HB: l I think it's true when people say don't sleep with your make-up on.

HB: What does your cleansing routine look like?

HB: It really depends. If I have tonnes of make-up on, I'm probably going to double cleanse. If I've been running around all day and had SPF on all day, I'm probably going to double cleanse. If I've had no make-up on for the day and I'm just at home and didn't have a lot on my skin, I'll probably just go in with our cleanser and let it do its job.

I just pay attention to my skin and listen to my skin. I never skip cleansing at night, no matter what. My problem with cleansers before is that I felt like it didn't really give me the job that I needed, unless I did a double cleanse. Our cleanser has done such a good job at getting such a deep, hydrating cleanse that I'm okay to skip the double cleansing sometimes. Then sometimes in the morning, I just rinse my face with water—it depends on how my skin is feeling.

HB: Rhode's edit is very concise—is that something you think about when launching new products?

HB: The cadence in which we put product out is very important to me. As a consumer of beauty and somebody who loves to buy products and shop online, I've always found it really overwhelming when you go on a website and there's just too much to choose from. Most of the time I would rather give up than try to figure out what to buy for myself. I do think there's a level of overconsumption and overproduction that happens in the world of beauty and it feels like there's something new coming out every single day. So, something I'm committed to is really thoughtful launches.

HB: What else can we expect from Rhode in 2024?

HB: Our cleanser is coming this month, which has been in the works since before we launched Rhode. I was so committed to making it feel special and different and not like anything else; it proved to be harder than I thought. That's why it's taken so long. We're expanding in colour in 2024, as well; people responded really well to the Peptide Lip Tints. My goal with colour is going to constantly be to push it forward with this marriage of skincare and cosmetics.
