And as I made my way into the newly-opened Makaibari Bungalow at Taj Bengal Kolkata, I realised I had made the right choice as this was no ordinary store. For the past 160 years, Makaibari has been a frontrunner in organic farming as they continue to grow and craft fine organic teas in Darjeeling. Stepping into the store felt like going back into the era when Makaibari was founded. I witnessed the brand’s colonial roots in every nook and corner and got a glimpse into the old-world charm of bungalow life, where nature, community, and traditional craftsmanship come to the fore.

Starting off with the interiors, the store blends indoor and outdoor spaces with warm walnut wood tones, brass accents, and plush handcrafted furnishings. At the heart of the space is a cosy living room, kitchen, and fireplace, where furniture, carpets, and a tea library harmoniously coexist.

The most charming part of the store, however, was its scenic balcony. Separated by French doors, this area provided a calm setting for a tea-tasting session, where one can experience Makaibari’s finest blends.
