The 2010s’ fashion is back and here are trends you should cop from the decade

Everything you need to embrace the era of individuality.

Harper's Bazaar India

Even though the ‘90s hit the sweet spot for most of us, the 2010s came with an era of fashion awakening. Be it Katrina Kaif’s skinny jeans and cottage-core looks in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Deepika Padukone’s festival fashion in Cocktail or her normcore looks in Karthik Calling Karthik, the decade was brimming with women embracing their individuality and expressing themselves through their outfit choices.

“I feel the 2010s were the beginning of individuality for me; it’s when you know people started wanting to dress up according to their personality rather than just blindly following trends. There were skinny jeans, athleisure, and normcore. But to me, 2010s were essentially the resurgence of individual style,” says renowned fashion stylist Edward Lalrempuia, who has been behind the stunning looks of many Bollywood celebrities.

Celebrity stylist, Amandeep Kaur, who has been responsible for the drool-worthy looks of the likes of Vicky Kaushal, says the 2010s witnessed “the coming together of comfort and feminine silhouettes like tights with loose tees, drop shoulder tops, peplums, ballet flats, etc.”

Kaur further adds, “Normcore and athleisure are both becoming bigger this season and they are adopted in the most unconventional/individualistic ways this time around. Think normcore with a Bohemian twist or athleisure with an evening-wear twist. It’s all kinds of interesting amalgamations of unique silhouettes in these larger trends.”

Normcore

Before Gen Zs added their touch of easygoing glamour to normcore, millennials were making comfort fashionable. Normcore served as the antidote to the lavish, larger-than-life runway looks, which left you feeling the prettiest, but also the most tired girl in the world.

Festival fashion

With the celebrities unwinding in relaxed festival fashion at Coachella, young women across the world embraced the style, even when they were not sipping on beers and listening to music while lying down on the grass.

Skinny jeans

Throughout the 2010s, our butts have lived in skinny jeans, and it was only in 2019 that we decided to go for the loose fits. After a hiatus of four years, skinny jeans are back in style. Simply put on your skinny jeans with a crop top, and you’re ready to party!

Ballet flats

In the 2010s, almost nobody ever wore slides. It was more about closed-toe shoes and ballet flats were the go-to shoes for most women. This shoe style is back as it started trending on social media, but the internet is divided about it. Only time will tell if people come around.

Athleisure

It feels like athleisure never left us (the vice versa holds true, too), but while the 2010s are making a comeback, this trend continues to stick around. Like Kaur said, your joggers and bomber hoodies are in the mood to party. These will claim the space you reserved for evening wear in your closet!

Millennial pink

With the Barbie movie releasing this year, our lives have been painted in all shades of pink and that’s exactly what millennial pink of the 2010s was all about. Salmon, macaroon pink, cerise, fuchsia and more shades of pink are bound to make their way to our closets.

Royal-ness

The 2010s witnessed two new additions to the British Royal Family—Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle—both women came with a superior sense of fuss-free fashion. Middleton made formal dressing a style statement and Markle made sure it continued to remain so. Blazer dresses, button-down numbers, and clean silhouettes in neutral shades are back.

Bodycons

Remember the era of bandage and bodycon dresses? In 2023, we embrace our love handles and little bumps, and not care about the stereotypical notions of beauty. Strapless bodycons, slip dresses and fitted maxis are all the rage right now.
