The world of fashion changes more rapidly than the weather in Mumbai. Trends recycle themselves every few years, and with the resurgence of fast fashion, things go in and out of style almost every day. One new trend that has recently gotten the internet chirping is jorts. Yes, the knee-length jean shorts that young boys wore in the 90s are back, for better or worse. So, we took it as our cue to scour the internet for other trends that are coming back in celebrity street style.
Jorts
The trick to Jorts, I recently learned, is the looser, the better. Throw on a pair of boxers, let the waistband peek out of your shorts, put on a simple baby tee and voila, you are serving Gigi Hadid on a casual day.
The popularity of jorts comes from its functionality and the fact that it can be created by upcycling a pair of your dad's old jeans. Cut it to knee-length, and now you're wearing the trendiest shorts in town.
Jorts have strutted their way onto the runways as well. They were embellished at Gucci Resort 2023, a dark-wash version from Max Mara pre-fall 2022 was worn with a button-up and a light jacket, and Fendi's with sharp button-ups. Fashion houses were one step ahead the whole time. So, can we say jorts have become timeless?
Ballet Flats
The "old money" way of dressing is the new Y2K. While we have bid goodbye to baby tees and neon and said hello to neutrals, ballet core is the next new trend. As a girl who wore ballet flats for most of her childhood, I am game for this footwear craze, all over again. Sofia Richie and Chanel are leading this new movement; the model has been seen wearing her Chanel flats everywhere she goes and looks oh so good doing it. And it's not just her; if you take a closer look at the images that flood your social media, you will spot many celebrities donning the extra chic streetwear look completed with their new shoe choice.
Oversized Belts and Micro-Mini Skirts
Picture Ashley Tisdale on every single red carpet in the 2000s. You guessed it right, oversized belts are back! Grab the most oversized belt and the shortest skirt, and pair the two with a tank top. The functionality of belts is no longer the goal. No one wants a cinched waist anymore, they only want the latest accessory to heighten the shortness of their skirt.
Dresses over Pants
I don't think anyone was ready for the restoration of this fashion crime. What started as a joke on Tiktok, turned into a movement. Influencers began sashaying to significant events in this look, and the irony further faded away when Bella Hadid was spotted in a co-ord blazer suit with a green dress over. Hadid is known for making anything look straight off the runway, and thus, yet another trend was solidified.
