The Tony Awards or The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, took place at New York City’s Lincoln Center on Sunday night. Hosted by Ariana DeBose for the third consecutive year, the awards saw the Daniel Aukin-directed production Stereophonic emerge as the biggest winner of the night, taking home five Tonys. Additionally, The Outsiders, co-produced by Angelina Jolie, and Merrily We Roll Along, starring first-time Tony winners Daniel Radcliffe and Jonathan Groff, bagged four Tonys each, respectively.
Sharing the spot for the highest number of nominations, Hell’s Kitchen, a jukebox musical featuring songs by and inspired by the life of Alicia Keys, and Stereophonic, received 13 nominations each. Although the former missed out on the award for Best Musical (won by The Outsiders), the show's star, Maleah Joi Moon earned her very first Tony Award, winning Best Lead Actress in a Musical.
The night also saw a few movie and TV actors bag Tonys for their performances. While Sarah Paulson won Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her performance in Appropriate, Daniel Radcliffe received the Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical award for his role in the revival of Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along.
Apart from the award ceremony, the event featured a host of performances that captivated the audience. These included numbers by Radcliffe, Groff, and Lindsay Mendez; the cast of Merrily We Roll Along, The Who’s Pete Townsend, and the cast of The Who’s Tommy, Alicia Keys, and Jay-Z with the cast of Hell’s Kitchen and Eddie Redmayne with the cast of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, among others.
