#Spooky Season: 6 horror movies to watch this Halloween for a night full of fright

Let fear reign the festivities.

Harper's Bazaar India

For those who want to stay in this Halloween, there's a whole world of cinema filled with scary villains and goosebump moments. Whether it’s watching a spirit roam around a haunted house or feeling the chills with spine-tingling soundtracks, there’s a lot to watch if you want to feel the thrill in the comfort of your home.

Halloween (1978)

This film from the '70s follows the life of serial killer Michael Myers (Nick Castle) as he stalks a teen babysitter (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends. The countless sequels, remakes, and adaptations, don't make us sweat and shiver as much as this original. And you will realise why Jamie Lee Curtis was given the title of the ‘scream queen’ while Myers is considered by many to be one of the most iconic villains of all time.

The Shining (1980)

There’s absolutely no way we will leave out this Stanley Kubrick masterpiece in our Halloween movie list. Starring Jack Nicholson, this classic revolves around him, his wife, and his kid as they find themselves in an old hotel during the winter. The film’s got many iconic scenes—we’re talking about evil ghost twins, flooded hallways and elevators, Nicholson's iconic dialogue: ‘Here’s Johnny!’, and more. Even if you have seen the movie before, you’d still be shocked as the secrets unravel.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

You’ve certainly missed out on an impressive horror film if you haven’t watched this one. The killer has razors as fingernails, and if that wasn’t creepy enough, he preys on people in their dreams, which, in turn, kills them in reality. All of this makes for a gripping plot and storyline and will surely make you want to sleep with the lights on.

The Ring (2002)

This remake of the 1999 Japanese horror film, Ringu is a massive improvement on the original. Things don’t get any scarier than a videotape with images that lead to a phone call predicting the viewer’s death in exactly a week. Reporter Rachel Keller investigates the story after four teenagers pass away in the exact way. She also watches the tape herself. Does she get to the bottom of the mystery and unravel it or does she face a similar fate? It's a story you shouldn't miss.

Trick ‘r Treat (2007)

This film has four stories, all set in a small town in Ohio, each taking place on Halloween. It includes a high school principal living a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin meeting the ‘right guy’; a group of teenagers playing a prank that goes too far; and a woman, her husband and an old man being visited by a supernatural trick-or-treater. The residents soon encounter real ghosts and goblins and realise that some traditions are best not forgotten.

The Conjuring (2013)

This movie turned out to be so scary and horrific that it went on to become the highest-grossing horror franchise in cinema (with seven films to follow). Inspired by the true-life exploits of paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, the duo is called to search an isolated farmhouse that has a spirit who has terrorised a family living there. If you love it, you can continue the binge session with Annabelle and The Nun films that are part of the franchise.
