After ‘Barbie,’ the actor's next production venture will be a live-action remake of our favourite board game!

Riding high on the success of Barbie, the actor and producer of the movie, Margot Robbie is all set to produce a Monopoly movie through her production company. Yes, the board game that’s seen players splurge on and fight over real estate, is all set to get its live-action movie version! Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap has teamed up with the game’s parent company, Hasbro Entertainment, and Lionsgate, which owns the rights to the game, to bring one of the most iconic boardgames to celluloid. The news was revealed at the CinemaCon conference held a few weeks ago in Las Vegas.

Monopoly is available in more than 100 countries across the globe and has sold nearly half a billion copies, going all the way back to 1935. The game was first created by game designer Lizzie Maggie in 1903 as a means to teach people about the perils of economic inequality. It was originally called ‘The Landlord’s Game’, but was changed to Monopoly in the 1930s, after it started being sold by the Parker Brothers, now owned by Hasbro Entertainment.

Though we do not have all the details about the script or the cast and crew, we’re excited to see how Robbie and the makers bring the fascinating world of Monopoly to life, more so because the game does not have any characters. Will someone take on the character of the game’s mascot, Rich Uncle Pennybags? What happens if one passes 'Go' or ends up in 'Jail'? All this remains a mystery, but it sure promises to be a fun ride.

LuckyChap was founded by Robbie and her now-husband, Tom Ackerly, along with Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr in 2014, a year after Robbie’s performance in The Wolf of Wall Street got her into the limelight. The production house has gone on to produce many of Robbie’s movies, including I, Tonya; Terminal; and Birds of Prey. The company was also instrumental in the success of Barbie, as they, after joining the production team, convinced Mattel and Warner Bros. of the movie’s massive potential and the need for Greta Gerwig to be the director.

“I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair, Adam Fogelson in a press release. “They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care and join Monopoly with a clear point of view.”

“Monopoly is a top property—pun fully intended,” said LuckyChap in a news release. “Like all of the best IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”

The fascination with toys and games doesn’t just end here for Robbie and LuckyChap. Last month, the production house announced that they’d be making a movie based on The Sims, a massively popular game in the early 2000s that saw players control people (through their avatars) in a simulated setting. Add to that, Robbie will also be producing a film adaptation of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride present at four of Disney’s theme parks around the world.
