5 life lessons that we learnt from Devi Vishwakumar from the current season of Never Have I Ever

A millennial boy’s take on the show

Harper's Bazaar India

The comedy, sass, and drama is back with the recently-released third season of Never Have I Ever on Netflix. Needless to say, we’ve all hunkered down in our couches to watch our favourite ABCD (American Born Confused Desi) deal with friendship, relationships (are you team Paxton or team Ben, or do you just want Devi to date someone else?) and family. And there’s no prize for guessing who steals the show once again – who else but Devi Vishwakumar. Going through what every teenager experiences, the perfectly imperfect Devi gives us a host of life lessons as this young lady tries to figure out who she is and what her heart truly desires. Here are a few of the best.

Take the high road

We got Dr. Jamie Ryan drilling this point home during Devi’s therapy sessions (YAAAS to seeking professional help!). Perceived to be the girl “who’s a lot”, she tries her best to fit in. But time has had its effect on her, and boy is it the good kind. When she finally realises that she doesn’t have to bring herself down to the level of those who will never be able to rise above her, it’s a lesson well delivered. By choosing to be the bigger person, Devi sure grew to be someone we’ll look up to.

Self love is the best love

Always having her self-worth evaluated by what others think of her makes Devi constantly ask herself if she will ever be enough. A scene that stands out is the one where she confesses to her mother that no boy will be able to love her. The notion is immediately shut down with a profound reply, “You are never too much and you are always enough.” All that Devi needed to know is that change starts with her. And soon, she does realise that if she’s good enough for herself, she’s good enough for the world.

Being in a relationship isn’t the solution

This realization of self love seamlessly brings us to our next lesson. Devi’s long, yet eventful journey of self discovery soon makes her come to terms with the fact that she doesn’t need to fill that hole of hating herself with the love of a partner. Knowing that chasing boys will lead to nothing, Devi starts to live a life that no longer seeks the love she craves from others. It’s all about good vibes only as she learns about what and who she values, the person she truly is, and loving herself with confidence.

No matter what happens, it’s all going to be okay

With the third season filled with moments where we see her nervous, anxious, scared, stressed, over thinking (you name it)—not once does Devi buckle under pressure. We see her constantly remind herself that it’s going to be alright no matter the outcome. Being her biggest cheerleader seems to be doing wonders for Devi as she begins to trust herself and start accepting herself as a winner who’s come a long way.

Perfection is the enemy of art

It’s all about Devi’s new mindset in the latest season. And she’s realised that she can find calm within the chaos. Devi’s a mess, and a pretty cool one at that. But she’s now able to own these imperfections and be comfortable in the fact that messiness can be really awesome, can help her in her personal life, and make her a better person and a better friend.

More power to you Devi! True to your name, you’re an absolute goddess.
