It’s been two years since the world saw the 20-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer play the final match of his career. He hung his boots at 41 after a loss in doubles at the Laver Cup, alongside long-time rival Rafael Nadal, leaving lovers of the sport and the legend heartbroken. But all hope isn't lost. Amazon Prime Video is set to release a documentary titled The Last Serve: A Roger Federer Story, which will present a personal and intimate account of his decision to retire at the 2022 Laver Cup, a tournament he co-founded with his agent, Tony Godsick.
The footage for the documentary has been shot by Joe Sabia, the man behind the popular digital series 73 Questions. In 2022, Federer approached the American video content producer to capture his final moments on the tennis court. Based on his footage, Amazon Prime Video roped in British filmmaker Asif Kapadia, the brain behind documentaries like Senna (2010) and Diego Maradona (2019).
In addition to his final tournament and retirement, the movie will also feature interviews of some of Federer's biggest rivals, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. The documentary will touch upon the dynamics of competition and friendship that shaped Federer’s career and transformed the entire tennis world. That’s not all; the documentary will also include his wife, Mirka Federer's first interview in more than a decade.
While there's no official date yet, a few reports suggest that the movie is likely to be released in July 2024, coinciding with Wimbledon 2024.
