What is the coquette make-up trend and how to achieve it at home

Say hello to Barbiecore's flirtier cousin!

Harper's Bazaar India

Here’s the truth (you can decide if it’s sweet or bittersweet). From runways to our social media feeds, it’s the reign of pink. And it’s pretty clear that this is not some trend having its one-minute in the sun; it’s here to teach us that there is nothing wrong with embracing some hyper-femininity. And the best part? Barbiecore has pulled some of its friends to the forefront as well. We’re talking about the coquette make-up aesthetic—think of this as Barbiecore’s softer, flirtier, and more playful cousin.

To understand what the coquette aesthetic is, we need to turn the clock back to the 17th century. Throughout history, it's been a derogatory term for attention-seeking, flirtatious, and uber-feminine women. However, a few hundred years later, we know that being feminine or flirtatious is not a sign of weakness. And so, with this trend, TikTok and all of social media are reclaiming the term and giving it a new definition. Now, when we think of what the coquette aesthetic means, images of pretty bows and glossy lips come to mind. But don’t get tied up in the girlie-ness of it all—the coquette aesthetic is not without its edge.

The three main aspects of the coquette trend are—fluttery lashes, glossy lips, and lots of blush. Beyond this sacred trinity, you can tailor trends to suit your personal style. This trend combines elements from the Cold Girl aesthetic, Vanilla Girl aesthetic, doe-eyes, balletcore, and, of course, Barbiecore. It emphasises soft pinks, shimmer, and that naturally flushed look.

How to achieve the coquette make-up look

A dewy base

Start with a dewy foundation and a full-range concealer. The aim is to make your complexion look even, youthful, and naturally radiant. Think glazed doughnut, but slightly less glazed.

Statement blush

Once your base is set, it’s time for the most crucial step—blush. Remember, this is the make-it-or-break-it step because the coquette make-up look is all about statement blush. Reach for a liquid or cream blush for a smoother finish. Using shades of red or pink will help play up the doll-like look. But, of course, if that’s not your vibe, you can always get creative and as extra as you want to with this trend.

Wispy lashes

Fluttery and long eyelashes are a staple of this look. Whether you prefer to wear false eyelashes or use lengthening mascara, the end result should leave you with flirtatious eyelashes. As for the rest of your eye make-up, you can do a little doe-eyed make-up with a small wing. You can also apply a soft pink highlighter or eyeliner on the inner corners of your eyes to make them pop and keep them in tone with the blush.

Glossy lips

Add finishing touches to this look with a soft pink or berry-hued lip gloss.
