If you think about the very best in skincare, K-beauty and its offerings are sure to be on that list. They stand out for their innovative, solution-based products that cater to every beauty concern. The best part? It shifts the focus to forgotten but effective ingredients that tackle the root of skin issues without causing irritation or damage. Now, after introducing cult-favourite ingredients like snail mucin, propolis, and cica, K-beauty has chosen to spotlight another powerhouse ingredient: heartleaf.

What is it?

Also known as Houttuynia cordata, heartleaf is a plant extract known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties that soothe irritated skin. Once a popular ingredient in traditional East Asian medicine, it is now a sought-after ingredient in skincare. Those with acne-prone or oily skin, eczema, and other inflammatory conditions will love it for its gentle hydrating effects.

According to Dr Chytra V Anand, celebrity cosmetic dermatologist, heartleaf is rich in polyphenols, which makes it an effective tool for calming redness and irritation. “Heartleaf is a great ingredient, especially for those dealing with sensitive or acne-prone skin. It has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties that make it effective at calming redness and irritation, and it has gentle antibacterial benefits that support clearer skin,” Anand shares.

The best way to incorporate it?

Heartleaf is a very versatile ingredient, and it can be easily incorporated into your routine as a toner, moisturiser, cleanser, essence, and more. Using a heartleaf cleanser or toner helps reduce redness and balance oil production in the skin without clogging pores. Cleansers with heartleaf extract are especially good for sensitive skin while toners can soothe and prep your skin for the next steps in your routine. Those looking for benefits like hydration or calming irritation and inflammation could opt for serums or masks formulated with heartleaf.

Dr Trishna Gupte, founder and owner of Cosmo-Square clinic, ISCA institute, prefers using it in a way that reduces the heavy oily feeling on your skin. “I usually recommend using it in a serum or light moisturiser, so it can really sink in and do its thing without feeling heavy,” she adds.
