Decoding Hailey Bieber's glazed-doughnut nighttime skincare routine

Take your first step to skin that looks like a snack.

Harper's Bazaar India

By now you’ve heard the term ‘glazed-doughnut skin’ that was coined and popularised by model Hailey Bieber in a YouTube video earlier this year. However, if you’re part of the small band of people who you haven’t, allow us to fill you in on one of 2022's biggest skincare phenomena. Somewhere between glowy and glass skin, glazed-doughnut skin is all about layering, hydrating, and giving your skin more TLC than you thought possible.

Don’t be fooled by the name. This isn’t just another celebrity skincare fad. It’s a well thought out ,and strategically curated nighttime routine that will leave you with skin that looks like a snack. It’s like Hailey Bieber said—“My standard when I go to bed at night is that if I’m not getting into bed looking like a glazed doughnut, then I’m not doing the right thing.”

Scroll down and take your first step towards luminous skin!

Step 1: Double cleanse all the way

Every skincare routine that is worth its salt starts off with a good cleansing. But is once enough? If you are a daily makeup wearer and sunscreen wearer (as you should be), we’d probably say no. Kick your routine off with a gentle cleansing oil or balm that will melt all the product on your face right off. For this first step, try the Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm from Clinique. It is a lightweight makeup remover that easily tackles even the most tenacious products. Follow this with your everyday foaming cleanser. Ensure to use one that doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it parched.

Once your face is rid of all unwanted debris and day-old makeup, move on to step 2.

Step 2: Hydrate hydrate hydrate!

One of the main characteristics of having glazed skin is supplying it with an overdose of moisture and protecting the skin’s natural barrier. One way to do this is by using powerhouse ingredient, hyaluronic acid. It helps by acting as a humectant, which means it not only hydrates the outer layers of the skin but also retains water molecules. You can include the Minimalist 2% Hyaluronic Acid + PGA Face Serum in your routine. It pulls moisture into the deeper levels of the skin and locks it there, giving you glowing and plump skin.

Step 3: Time to lock in the moisture

After you’ve optimised the powers of HA and doused your face in moisture, it’s time to ensure it stays sealed in. For this, you can use another skin trend that has recently been popularised—slugging.

Ideally, this method involves applying petroleum jelly, but for our sugary-snack-like skin routine, we will do a slight variation. Instead of Vaseline, use a thick moisturiser like Laneige’s Water Sleeping Mask. Leaving it on overnight will provide you with another layer of hydration while acting as a moisture padlock.

Step 4: Top it up with a face oil

Any other skincare routine would end with the moisture-sealing balm. But if you want skin that is as nourished as Mrs Beiber’s, you will need to give it that little extra TLC in the form of a face oil. It’s one of the best ways to give the skin that radiant glow plus a healthy dose of nutrients. Apply the Charlotte Tilbury Collagen Superfusion Facial Oil on your slugged face and watch it gradually supercharge your skin.

Step 5: Wrap it up with some lip balm

Is having chapped lips one of your biggest peeves? If it isn’t one of the top three, a generous application of lip balm is a key part of achieving glazed doughnut-like skin. We recommend the Lip Sleeping Mask by Innisfree, which is infused with the goodness of green tea and seven other naturally-procured ingredients.

Of course, the last step is to get enough beauty sleep!
