This fishy facial trend has got everyone talking.

Harper's Bazaar India

As unusual as it sounds, salmon sperm has been making the rounds in the skincare industry, thanks to its intriguing benefits and high-profile endorsements. When Kim Kardashian casually mentioned on Keeping Up with the Kardashians that she had tried a salmon sperm facial, the internet was immediately hooked. Not long after, Jennifer Aniston revealed she, too, had tried the treatment, sparking even more curiosity. From boosting hydration to promoting collagen production, this unconventional ingredient is being hailed as the new skincare secret. According to Dr Spoorthy Nagineni, consultant dermatologist at Zennara Clinics, these facials involve injecting polynucleotides derived from salmon sperm into the skin. Polynucleotides are fragments of DNA that make up our genetic code and play a key role in cellular repair and regeneration. When injected into the skin, these polynucleotides help improve hydration by binding moisture to the skin, stimulating collagen production, and increasing elastin levels. This process revitalises the skin and helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, making it a popular choice for those looking to turn back the clock on ageing.

According to experts, the powerful regenerative properties of polynucleotides can help nourish and rejuvenate the skin from within. According to Dr Ani Rayen, board-certified dermatologist, "Salmon sperm undergoes a series of meticulous biochemical processes to extract its DNA, which is then purified to ensure it is suitable for cosmetic applications. The process begins with harvesting sperm from salmon during the breeding season, typically in aquaculture facilities to ensure sustainability."

Dr Sagar Gujjar, MD dermatologist and founder of skinwood clinic, highlighted that this treatment is especially effective for addressing issues such as pigmentation, hair loss, dull or aging skin, and skin stressed by environmental factors like pollution and oxidation. He also pointed out that the treatment is supported by scientific research, with studies on polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRN)—a type of polynucleotide—demonstrating their positive impact on wound healing and their applications in cosmetic medicine. These studies, published in several medical journals, confirm the regenerative benefits of PDRN for both skin and hair care.

For those wondering if they could benefit from this treatment, Dr Spoorthy Nagineni offers some insight. "Salmon sperm facials are particularly beneficial for individuals with dry and dehydrated skin," she says. "They also offer a great option for those who aren’t ready for more invasive treatments like dermal fillers or Botox, as the polynucleotide injections provide a slight filling effect." He adds that people over 35, who are starting to notice the natural decline in collagen and elastin production, will find this treatment ideal for maintaining youthful, healthy skin.

According to Dr Rayen, the effects of the treatment can approximately last six to 12 months, noting that depending on the concentration and brand of salmon sperm used, three sessions, spaced one to three months apart, are typically needed.

For those hesitant about using animal-derived products, Dr Rayen suggests vegan or cruelty-free alternatives such as Profhilo, a skin booster that contains hyaluronic acid derived from plant extracts or produced artificially, offering hydration and skin rejuvenation.

When compared to other popular skincare treatments like PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or peptide-based facials, polynucleotide injections stand out for their comprehensive effects. Dr Nagineni notes that polynucleotides stimulate all the skin’s cells, including fibroblasts and keratinocytes, while increasing blood supply to the skin, making the treatment uniquely effective in boosting skin health.

Salmon sperm facials may sound unconventional, but the science and benefits behind this treatment make it a compelling option for those seeking cutting-edge skincare solutions. With proven effects in hydration, regeneration, and anti-ageing, it’s no wonder that this trend is gaining traction among celebrities and skincare enthusiasts alike. While the thought of incorporating salmon sperm into your beauty routine might take some getting used to, the promise of glowing, youthful skin just might make it worth the plunge.
