Imagine a tiny molecule living inside your cells, acting like a conductor in a cellular orchestra, keeping the energy flowing and repairs happening smoothly. That's nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) for you! This superstar coenzyme is getting a lot of attention lately, with whispers of it being the key to unlocking the fountain of youth and boosting energy levels. But is there any truth to the NAD buzz? Let's dive into the science and see if this molecule lives up to the hype.
The Powerhouse Within
Think of your cells as tiny factories. They need fuel to power all their amazing functions, and that fuel comes in the form of a molecule called ATP. NAD acts like a middleman, transferring electrons from food molecules to the machinery that creates ATP. Without NAD, your cellular factories would grind to a halt, leaving you feeling drained and sluggish. “NAD is essentially a precursor of Vitamin B3, and it plays a major role in cellular metabolism,” says Dr Sagar Gujjar, board-certified dermatologist, and founder of Mumbai-based clinic Skinwood.
But NAD does more than just keep the energy flowing. It's also involved in DNA repair, a crucial process to combat the wear and tear of time on our genetic code. Additionally, NAD activates sirtuins, a group of proteins known as the "guardians of the genome" for their role in promoting longevity and cellular health, according to this study.
The Anti-ageing Potion
“Every cell in our body uses NAD. But as we age, NAD levels naturally decline. When you take NAD supplements, it helps reverse signs of ageing, now outwardly necessarily, but from inside out,” says Dr Anjali Hooda, an American board-certified Internal Medicine practitioner. This can be likened to the conductor in our cellular orchestra getting a bit tired and missing some notes. “The energy production slows, repairs become less efficient, and the risk of age-related diseases increases.”
This is where the anti-ageing potential of NAD comes in. Dr Hooda adds, “NAD helps regenerate cells, helps you recover from injuries faster, helps people with depression, and is great for people with substance and food addictions too. It might also assist lower your lipid profile if you have cholesterol issues.” Researchers believe that by increasing NAD levels, we might be able to slow down or even reverse some of the cellular decline. According to this study by Sinclair Animal studies on mice and worms have shown promising results, with NAD precursors like NR (nicotinamide riboside) and NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) extending health span and reducing signs of ageing. NMN is currently available in India and is approved for oral consumption.
The Energy Booster
Feeling perpetually tired and perennially exhausted? You're not alone. But what if there was a way to naturally increase your cellular energy production? Studies suggest that NAD supplementation might do just that. According to this study, by supporting the mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, NAD could lead to more efficient energy production, translating to improved stamina and a noticeable reduction in fatigue.
“NAD helps jolt your cells awake, acting like a superfood for your body,” says Dr Gujjar. Dr Hooda says, “Especially after the pandemic, people have realised how much toxic stress our body is constantly under, with the lifestyle we lead and the food we consume. NAD helps overturn that, and it does a good job at detoxing you from the inside out.”
The Human Test
While animal studies are encouraging, the big question remains: can NAD work its magic on humans?Early human trials show some promise. Studies suggest that NAD supplementation may improve exercise performance, and insulin sensitivity, and even reduce inflammation, all factors that contribute to healthy ageing and increased energy levels.
But before you jump on the NAD train, it's important to remember that the research is still in its early stages. Most studies have involved small groups, and more research is needed to confirm the benefits and long-term safety of NAD supplementation in larger populations. “One must remember that NAD supplements are not yet approved by the FDA, and in India, only the oral precursor beta NMN is legally prescribed, which converts into the active form of NAD in the body. But there are no side effects of the supplement, and IV treatments, which are quite popular in the US will make their way into India soon,” says Dr Gujjar.
Dr Hooda says, “It is essential to analyse your body before you start with NAD supplements. It’s not a vanity fix, and I make sure I do diligent research on the patient’s history and current bodily functions before we begin with NAD.” NAD is a fascinating molecule with the potential to be a game-changer in the fight against ageing and fatigue. As research on NAD continues, we might just be on the cusp of unlocking something that might be revolutionary for our bodies.
