Popular make-up trends on our radar in 2024

Ombre lips for the win!

Harper's Bazaar India

Thanks to social media, the beauty universe is chock-a-block with trends. From strawberry girl to numerous food-inspired looks, beauty trends seem to breeze through at the speed of light and don't seem to be slowing down any time soon.

As the new year unfolds (and we overcome the fatigue of playing catch-up), we are preparing for a new set of trends that are taking over the Internet. And to give you a headstart, we've rounded up some of the top make-up trends, spotted on runways and our favourite celebrities that you should recreate this year.

Ombre lips

Beauty trends from the '90s are making a comeback. And after pencil-thin (Bella Hadid-like) eyebrows and frosted eyes, it's the ombre lips that's marking its return, with an upgrade, of course. This time around, it’s much more dramatic with dark overlined lips for the perfect pout!

As the name suggests, this look requires two or more lipstick shades (preferably in the same colour family); one much darker than the other. Begin by lining your lips with the darker shade and then go in with the lighter one, creating a soft gradient lip. Another way to achieve this look is by lining your lips with a dark lipstick and filling it in with a clear gloss. Bookmark this trend if you want a plumper and fuller pout!

Peach fuzz

Crowned Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2024, Peach Fuzz has created quite a buzz. This warm-toned hue is universally flattering and looks gorgeous as a blush, eyeshadow, or lipstick. So, the next time you’re looking to restock your make-up cabinet, keep an eye out for peachy-toned products instead of the same reds and pinks. This, and the autumn shades in its family, are easier to include in your routine than you think, and will (hopefully) continue to rank high on the 2024 trends chart.

Everything blue

Did you know, Pinterest predicted a surge in blue make-up as well as the aquamarine aesthetic in 2024? The study done by them reads, “In 2024, Gen Z and millennials will search for 'blue glam makeup' and 'pastel blue eyeshadow' as they find ways to incorporate this '60s staple into their modern beauty routines.”

You can incorporate this versatile and globally-loved colour into your routine in a number of ways. It could be a simple swipe of blue eyeliner or a blue-ish silvery eyeshadow for that gorgeous iridescent mermaid look. You can even pick your shade depending on the occasion. For instance, pastel blue would look stunning at brunch whereas a generous application of blue mascara would be perfect for a nighttime event. This year, blue is not just a vibrant hue, it’s a beauty statement!

Glazed blush

After the rise of glazed skin and glazed nails in 2023, it is now time for glazed blush to steal the show. This year, the texture of our flushes will go from matte and powdery to glossy and dewy, which gives a more hydrated appearance. One could say that this trend stems from the influence that skincare has had on make-up in the last few years.

In order to achieve this delicious blush look, begin with a moisturiser and a lightweight foundation. Then, layer up your cream blushes with a wee bit of liquid highlighter and apply this to your cheekbones for a glowing and lifted look. The beauty of this trend is that it not only adds colour to your face but also brings in some definition.

Geometric liner

You don’t need to be an artist to hop onto this trend, but you do need a steady hand! Geometric liner can be as straightforward as a double-lined wing or a single stripe on the lids (think Gigi Hadid).

We get it though, it can seem daunting and it is probably why a lot of people don’t indulge in it unless they’ve had some professional training. However, to be honest, it is not that complicated. It’s all about creating symmetry and balance. We’ve seen this trend on runways and red carpets in various popping hues including red, blue, green, and even orange. It is honestly one of the most versatile trends and can be quite playful.

Soft glam

One trend we’ve seen on practically every celebrity (even when they're walking down red carpets) is the soft glam make-up look. This clean-girly-girl aesthetic came into our lives a while ago and, it seems, it's here to stay. The soft glam look is all about radiant, hydrated, and healthy skin, which is why make-up is only a supporting character in this trend, there to support and play up the real protagonist—your skin. From flushed cheeks and barely-there concealer to subtly feathered brows and a glossy, hydrated pout, this look is all about enhancing your natural features!
