#TrendAlert: Butter yellow ruled the A/W 2024 runways and here's how you can incorporate it in your wardrobe

After red last year, there’s a new hot colour on the block that has taken the fashion world by storm. Pastel yellow not only overtook the Spring-Summer ’24 runways, it dominated the Autumn-Winter ’24 fashion shows as well, proving it’s going to remain relevant throughout the year.

What is ‘butter yellow’?

Neither as bright as lemon yellow and not as dull as beige, butter yellow is exactly what it sounds like, the shade of a stick of butter. The soft, creamy hue can have variations though, just like how the colour of butter might vary from region to region. But mostly, it is always muted, with just a tinge of warmth.

While mustard and ochre are the shades in the yellow spectrum one might expect to be popular during the colder months, if the ongoing Autumn-Winter fashion week season is to be believed, butter yellow will be all over the streets and in our wardrobes in the chillier season as well. 

Light yellow was a prominent feature in the collections of brands like Gucci, Jil Sander, and Burberry among others, taking the form of oversized coats, handbags, and blazers. In fact, even the red carpet has not been immune to its charm, with Aubrey Plaza notably donning a buttery look from Loewe’s Spring Summer ’24 collection at the Emmy’s.

How to incorporate the colour in your wardrobe

The easiest way to style the colour of the moment is to wear it like a true neutral shade. So the next time you find yourself reaching out for that ivory shirt or a grey waist jacket, replace it with something in butter yellow instead. The colour complements most deep tones like navy, wine, black, or even different textures like denim and faux fur. Buttery accessories— think light yellow bags, heels, and slides—will practically go with anything, injecting your outfit with a bit of sunny joy this spring. And considering the shade was all over the A/W 2024 runways as well, looks like even winter wear this year will get a boost of warmth from the happy colour.
