Tailored bermudas are the mid-year guilty pleasures

About time our formal-wear had a summer glow-up.

The monsoon this year is frantically calling out for a shorter, knee-grazing counterpart to skin-hugging lowers. Something not too baggy, not too skintight and yet something that beams in summer halo. And if you guessed a tailored Bermuda short, we’re betting our money on you.

Strutting their way in with Paul Mescal’s fit for Sabato De Sarno’s Gucci Spring 2025 Menswear Collection, and making a statement with a custom Bottega outfit worn by Ayo Edebiri for the premier of Inside Out 2, the bottoms are making it to an early micro trend this season. These long, tailored shorts embody the casual, more relaxed hemisphere of luxury.

Spotted on fashion trendsetters like Jacob Elordi, Troye Sivan, and Suga from BTS, the bermudas are officially in for the latter half of the season. With approval from the runway at Fendi Spring Summer 2025, the garment has made its way to concert outfits, red carpets, and daily walks of celebrity fashion. Seen on screen as early as the 1993 Jurassic Park sensation Ellie Sattler played by the iconic Laura Dern to the Spring Summer 2024 collection at Burberry and Givenchy. Perfect for a sunny day out, a get-together or an official outing, the tailored Bermuda is nothing less than a versatile garment that can be paired up with a shirt, a vest, or a crop top for an event-worthy look.

Structurally a tailored Bermuda is defined by its knee-length hemline for improved functionality in tropical terrains. Dating back to the early 20th century, these garments were specifically designed keeping in mind the climate and structure’s mobility all the more while retaining the formal composure of a military uniform. These lightweight alternatives to trousers took to civilian fashion just after. With the increase of hemline post-war, the bermudas were also made available for women’s fashion to experiment with. Making it an attractive pick for local sporting and sightseeing, the shorts had now travelled to arenas of fashion trends. Bringing in a touch of elegance to vacation spreads, the tailored bermudas were a prominent asset in timeless looks as well as seasonal outfit inspiration from summer bops of the 50s.

Taking cues from B-town folks, you can style tailored bermudas with a cut-sleeve jacket and a pair of chunky sports shoes as inspired by Shahid Kapoor’s outfit for Reebok, or take inspo from Shehnaaz Gill in custom Suket Dhir, but make it tailored bermuda friendly. Generally styled with a crisp blazer, sleek belt, and a dress shirt for a formal meet, the bermudas can also be paired with something with a pop of colour, paying homage to the garments' tropical origins. The contemporary breathability of the garment is such a break from monotony of traditional suit attires. That it is not only a refreshing addition but a much required one. Adding funk and fun to the pairing, we're talking about the denim equivalent of this summer. Tailored Bermudas are here to stay.
