Everything you need to know about building your fine jewellery collection
Amrapali Jewels' Tarang Arora, Prerna Rajpal of Amaris, and jewellery expert Richa Goyal Sikri discuss the hows and whys of owning precious jewellery.
The best fine jewellery purchases usually are driven by love and longing, turning out to be a beautiful investment cherished by generations. Building your jewellery collection is great fun because the journey of getting unusual pieces together is so personal and the whole process of collating it is a joy in itself.
Prerna Rajpal, the founder and chief designer of AMARIS, says fine jewellery is not just an adornment but a narrative of artistry and timeless value. “As a beginner stepping into the world of precious investments, look for pieces that resonate on a personal level, yet hold universal appeal,” says Prerna. Echoing her, Amrapali Jewels’ creative director, Tarang Arora says investing in fine jewellery is like uncovering hidden gems. “It requires patience, knowledge, and an appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship. It’s not just about buying pieces, but understanding their story, the artistry behind them, and their enduring value.” Whether you’re purchasing a special piece for a loved one or adding to your own collection, it’s crucial to make certain informed decisions while purchasing the same. “For beginners, it’s a journey of discovery, where each piece not only adorns but also tells a tale of history and personal taste,” adds Tarang.
QUALITY MATTERS
When it comes to jewellery, it is always quality over quantity. It’s better to spend more on a single piece that will hold its value than splurging on several pieces of inferior quality. When it comes to buying a jewel that will hold value over time, gemologist and jewellery expert Richa Goyal Sikri suggests to buy the best quality within your budget. “For example, it is better to purchase a top quality, untreated aquamarine or a beautiful peridot than to acquire a low grade, heavily treated ruby,” adds Richa.
Choose Your Metals
It’s always good to look out for jewellery that will suit your styling aesthetic and taste. Furthermore, the material and metal of your jewellery can have an effect on your health too. The most common metals used in jewellery are gold, silver, and platinum. We suggest you consider the metal, how much it weighs and how it feels on the body to avoid allergic reaction. Finding the right ring, bracelet or necklace is not just about its appearance always, and goes beyond your style and taste. “Traceability and responsible sourcing will serve in the long run to add value to your purchases, so you must understand the origin of the precious stones in your jewel and track the record of your jeweller,” says Richa.
LOOK FOR LIMITED EDITIONS
Consider looking into collection jewellery that is rare but strong pieces depending on what your budget allows. Investing in unusual jewelled ornaments could be a savvy investment with the value of jewellery going up. Jewellery overall is an excellent long-term investment. Do your homework so you can understand more about the jewellery you will be collecting.
GOLD IS ALWAYS A GOOD OPTION
Due to its tangible nature, historical and emotional significance, jewellery in general and specifically gold jewellery, for a long time, has been regarded as one of the safest ways to invest. “When you are buying jewellery, or a precious gem, whatever value you perceive is not real. You will only know the reality of that item’s worth when you are in the market to sell,” says Richa. The best thing about gold jewellery is that it is wearable on a daily basis and also has the option to sell it at times of need. However, we suggest not to invest in gold-plated chains as they don’t have as much of a reasonable resale value, rather invest in gold coins.
