Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Zakir Hussain, and all the big winners from the 2024 Grammy Awards
Record-breaking, first-time wins, and surprises marked the ceremony.
Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Killer Mike, and Billie Eilish won big at the 2024 Grammy Awards, which were held on Sunday night at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain made India proud with their awards. Hosted by Trevor Noah for the fourth year in a row, the Grammys lauded winners across 94 categories and two ceremonies in Los Angeles.
Here’s a round-up of the biggest wins from the night.
Taylor Swift wins big, scripts history, and announces her upcoming album
Taylor Swift won Album of the Year for Midnights and became the first person to win four times in that category—she beat Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon, who are tied for three awards. If that wasn’t enough, Swift announced the release date (April 29) of her new album—The Tortured Poets Department (not Reputation as anticipated by Swifties)—while accepting the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal.
Miley Cyrus wins her first Grammy
It was a night to remember for Miley Cyrus as she took home her first Grammy Award—Best Pop Solo Performance—for her hit ‘Flowers’. Her acceptance speech was gushy and quintessentially Miley. She started her acceptance speech by expressing how excited she was to share the stage with the singing legend, Carey and would have probably missed the moment as she was stuck in traffic. "I could have missed the award, that's fine, but not Mariah Carey!" said Cyrus on stage. She went on to thank all her loved and close ones and regaled the audience with a sweet story. The highlight of Miley Cyrus's acceptance speech, however, was when she ended it with a very Miley quip, "I don't think I forgot anyone, but I might've forgotten underwear...bye!"
She won her second Grammy, later in the show, for the Record of the Year category.
Dua Lipa’s sensational opening performance
Dua Lipa's opening performance was a medley of her newest single 'Training Season' as well as 'Dance the Night' and 'Houdini'. After the high-energy performance on 'Training Session' with a metal scaffold construction for a prop, host Trevor Noah called Lipa “one of the greatest performers of a generation”. He added, “I’m never going to look at scaffolding the same again.”
Big win for India
Zakir Hussain scripted history at the 2024 Grammy Awards as he bagged three awards in one night. Hussain won the Best Global Music Performance award for his contribution to 'Pashto', alongside Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, featuring Rakesh Chaurasia. The album that the song is from, As We Speak, won the Contemporary Instrumental Album award. In addition to this, Shankar Mahadevan and Hussain's fusion band, Shakti, won Best Global Music Album for This Moment—shared with John McLaughlin, V Selvaganesh, and Ganesh Rajagopalan.
Joni Mitchell’s first performance at the Awards
Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell performed at the Grammy Awards for the first time in her 56-year career. The icon, who recently turned 80, delivered a moving performance of 'Both Sides Now' with the support of musicians like Jacob Collier, Allison Russell, SistaStrings, Blake Mills, Lucius, and Brandi Carlisle. Mitchell won the award for Best Folk Album for Joni Mitchell at Newport (Live).
