I am a cinephile who has consumed Bollywood in its entirety. It’s one of the reasons why I am a hopeless romantic who quotes dialogues and corny song lyrics at the drop of a hat in almost all of my conversations. One of the main reasons for that (and I can’t thank my old man enough for it) is Yash Chopra. You always know you are in for a treat when you see the red-white-gold Yash Raj Films (YRF) logo come on the screen, Lata Mangeshkar’s voice echoing in the background.

The legendary director, considered by many as the ‘Father of Romance’, is celebrating 50 fantastic years of filmmaking in 2023, and, to mark the occasion, Netflix is bringing its viewers a heart-warming treat this Valentine’s Day with The Romantics. The trailer of the upcoming title was released today and it sure promises to be nothing less than a mushy trip down memory lane.

Here’s why. The special celebrates a man whose films have transcended time, and will forever be evergreen. Be it watching just how big a romantic the angry, young Big B is in Deewar, Kabhi Kabhie, and Silsila in the ‘70s; seeing Rishi Kapoor and Sridevi celebrate love in Chandni; or seeing SRK being a hopeless romantic in Dil Toh Paagal Hai, Veer-Zaara, and Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yash Ji, made me, much like anyone else, fall in love with cinema. He is the reason stars across generations are the global sensations that they are today. If you want to feel the love, all you've got to do is immerse yourself in the wonderful world of a Yash Chopra film.

Taking into account Bollywood’s ever-increasing presence, it’s probably no surprise that the trailer of the four-part series is subtitled in 32 languages! After all, Yash Chopra and YRF have played an instrumental role in shaping the Hindi film industry for more than 50 years.

The star-packed docuseries will feature 35 leading voices of the Hindi film industry, including the mega-stars who have worked closely with YRF, and will dive into the history of Bollywood through the lens of Yash Chopra’s movies.

The Romantics will delve into Chopra’s personal life, his vision, and passion for filmmaking, and the impact his films have had on Indian society. It’s an absolute treat for fans of Yash Chopra’s films as well as for everyone interested in cinema.

I’m counting down the days to this!
