Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars team up to drop ‘Die with a Smile’
Giving all the feels of doomsday love, the romantic ballard, that’s all things retro, sees the duo collaborate for the very first time.
Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars have teamed up for an unexpected new single "Die With a Smile." The multi-Grammy winners have delivered their first collaboration as a duo, shocking fans with their epic love ballad. The singing sensations, who dropped the video of the song on August 16, are seen twinning in matching blue and red retro-style western outfits, with Mars strumming the guitar while Gaga plays the piano.
If one wanted to know what the vibe of the song is, the track begins with Mars, the "Grenade" singer mulling about living life without his love. The lyrics go, "If the party was over and our time on Earth was through, I’d wanna hold you just for a while and die with a smile. If the world was ending, I'd wanna be next to you." What follows is the camera moving to Gaga who’s smoking a cigarette while playing to begin her solo verse. "Lost in the words that we scream. I don't even wanna do this anymore. Because you already know what you mean to me. And our love is the only war worth fighting for," she sings before ending with "Wherever you go, that’s where I’ll follow. Nobody’s promised tomorrow, so I’mma love you every night like it's the last night." What follows is the duo finishing the song looking into each other’s eyes with a retro heart shape forming around them.
In a recent press statement, Gaga spoke about how the song was made. “Bruno and I have a lot of mutual respect for each other and were talking about collaborating. I was finishing up my own album in Malibu and one night after a long day he asked me to come to his studio to hear something he was working on. It was around midnight when I got there and I was blown away when I heard what he had started making. We stayed up all night and finished writing and recording the song. Bruno’s talent is beyond explanation. His musicianship and vision is next level. There’s no one like him.” Mars, too, gave his take on the experience on working with her, “Getting to work with Gaga has been an honour. She’s an icon and she makes this song magical. I’m so excited for everyone to hear it.”
The track is also the first either of the two artists have released a new track in more than two years. Gaga’s last was the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack song, "Hold My Hand," while Mars' last single was 2022's "After Last Night," from An Evening With Silk Sonic, his album in 2021. As far as what’s next is concerned, Gaga is set to star as Harley Quinn in the upcoming DC Comics film Joker: Folie à Deux opposite Joaquin Phoenix.
