How to make the most of the honeymoon phase in a relationship

When I started dating, I was showered with cheesy pick-up lines, surprises at my doorstep, my favourite flowers on every date, and kisses and cuddles galore. I was told to ‘enjoy it while it lasts,’ and that ‘the honeymoon phase is real’. Yet, here I am, with a bouquet of white roses next to me, with a note that has my favourite song’s lyrics. I guess the honeymoon phase is here to stay. 

According to a study conducted by New York University, a honeymoon phase can last from six months up to two years. It’s typically defined as the period in a relationship that is filled with date nights, intimacy, and lots of fun and laughter. It is expected that eventually, the couple will fall into familiar patterns and habits, and loose the initial spark. While this doesn’t imply the couple is out of love, there’s no harm in wanting the fun to last, is there? 

Whether you’re new in a relationship or have gone through the many seasons, here’s a 101 guide on how to make the most of your honeymoon phase in a relationship and ensure it lasts. 

Cuddle, cuddle and cuddle some more 

According to family therapist Virginia Stir, “We need four hugs a day for survival, eight hugs a day for maintenance, and twelve hugs a day for growth.” Cuddling releases happy hormones such as endorphins and serotonin, and are a strong indicator of a happy and healthy relationship. For those whose love language is physical touch, cuddling or other forms of physical intimacy (a steamy make- out session, anybody?) are also ways of feeling and showing love towards their partner. Take out some time at the end of your day to just cosy up in a blanket and be with your partner. 

Flirt 
Bunny, a.k.a. Kabir Thapar from the film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani once said, “Flirting is good for health, just like yoga.” I wholeheartedly concur. Flirting could mean sending cute pick-up lines in the middle of a work day or leaving notes on the mirror before the person wakes up, or anything else that will make them smile. These small gestures are bound to make you and your partner feel happy, belonged, and thought of. Here’s your cue to look up some cheesy lines and hit send to your partner. 

Plan date nights 

People often underestimate the importance of regular date nights. In the honeymoon phase, we look forward to weekly date nights and surprises. So why not after? Date nights are a great way to squeeze in quality time with each other, try new activities together, and indulge in conversations that you might not otherwise have. It could mean going out for a wine and dine night, a weekend getaway, a night out on the town, or anything else. We’d also urge you to go the extra mile to plan a surprise date for your boo. 

Practice gratitude 
Being able to share love, laughter, and comfort with your partner is something to be grateful for. Practicing gratitude towards each other will not only make you feel more loved and closer but will also help you grow together through life. There are many ways to practice gratitude—there’s journaling, maintaining a gratitude jar, or even just saying affirmations to each other before you begin your day. 

Write love letters and evaluate your goals of the relationship 

Call me old-school, but there’s nothing better than handwritten letters with extravagant proclamations of love. Well, you needn’t be this dramatic, but once in a while, expressing your love and affection in words doesn’t do any harm. You can make this a team activity, where the two of you not only express your feelings but also understand and evaluate the areas that need to be worked on. Get as mushy and cheesy as you want, while still focusing on growth and well-being.
