How to get back to reading consistently again

A great piece of literature engages you in ways no other activity can. As you read, your mind starts building visuals and you start thinking. You also build your vocabulary. My reading habits were better when I was a student—I couldn’t keep a book down until I had read it entirely. Food, television, ‘chilling’ with friends, and every other activity was almost forgotten or skipped.

But as we grow up, ‘me time’ becomes a luxury. We’re either working or trying to catch up on sleep, and between all that, we end up watching something on OTT platforms or endlessly scrolling through reels. 
This means we end up with several half-read or unread books that we keep telling ourselves we will go back to. And maybe one day, we do manage to push ourselves to read the entire book and swear to devour literature regularly. But consistency is the hardest thing to achieve.

But it’s not impossible. So, if the bookworm in you wants to resurface, follow these tips and start reading consistently, again. 

Start small

If you haven't been reading regularly, it's essential to start small. Begin with short reading sessions, say 15 or 30 minutes a day, and gradually increase the duration as you build your reading habit.

Set a reading goal

Setting a reading goal can be a great motivator. Choose a realistic goal—maybe reading one book a month—and track your progress.

Choose the right book

Select a book that you find interesting and engaging. If you don't enjoy what you're reading, it will be challenging to form or maintain the habit.

Create a reading environment

Create a comfortable environment that encourages you to read. Choose a quiet and peaceful place, free from distractions such as television and mobile phones.

Schedule reading time

Make reading a part of your daily routine by scheduling time for it. Choose a time that works best for you, it could be early in the morning or before you go to bed.

Use technology

If you find it challenging to carry a physical book around, consider using an e-reader or audiobooks. They are convenient and allow you to consume literature on-the-go.

Join a book club

Joining a book club can be an excellent way to stay motivated and connect with other readers. You can discuss the books you're reading, and also get recommendations for new ones.

Keep a reading log

Keeping a record of the books you've read can be a great motivator. Write down the title, author, and your thoughts on the book. It will also help you keep track of your reading goal.

Read different genres

Don't limit yourself to one genre. You can choose from fiction, non-fiction, and biographies. It will keep your reading experience exciting and fresh.

Make it fun

Reading should be a fun and enjoyable experience. If you find yourself struggling to read regularly, try to incorporate fun activities such as reading challenges or rewards for completing a book.
