7 OTT releases to stream this April

A new month means a fresh content slate of movies and shows streaming online. As always, Bazaar India is here to guide you through the latest releases that are worth binge-watching. Right from Ripley and Parasyte: The Grey, to Amar Singh Chamkila, Sugar, and more, the month of April has a lot to look forward to!

Ripley

The upcoming series, adapted from the crime novels written by Patricia Highsmith, presents Tom Ripley in a whole new avatar. Set in the ‘60s, the show follows a conman (Andrew Scott) hired by a wealthy businessman to persuade his estranged son to return home and join the family business. Those well-versed with Ripley will know that things are far from simple; this is a tale filled with lies, deceit, and even murder. The show also stars Dakota Fanning and John Malkovich in supporting roles. 

Release date: April 4 on Netflix 

Parasyte: The Grey

The series is based on the popular manga series, Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki, that’s sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. According to its Netflix description, “When unidentified parasites violently take over human hosts and gain power, humanity must rise to combat the growing threat.” Staying faithful to the manga's main plot, the series centres on Su-in, played by Jeon So-nee, who gets caught up in a conflict between humans and parasitic creatures after learning about the parasite living inside her. Led by Jun-kyung (Lee Jung-hyun), a group called “The Grey” fights to eradicate the parasites.

Release date: April 5 on Netflix 

Sugar

Starring Colin Farrell, this highly-anticipated drama series follows John Sugar, a private investigator caught up in the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, granddaughter of Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. While trying to find out what happened to Olivia, Sugar uncovers the secrets of the Siegel family in a gripping tale of suspense and mystery.

Release date: April 5 on Apple TV+

What Jennifer Did

Fans of true crime are in for a treat with the upcoming docuseries, What Jennifer Did, created by Jenny Popplewell, who made American Murder: The Family Next Door. The series focuses on Jennifer Pan, a woman from Ontario, Canada, who experienced a traumatic night when intruders broke into her parents’ home, tied her up, and shot both of her parents. However, the investigation takes a surprising turn when authorities discover that Pan may have known a lot more about what happened that night than she claimed. Packed with police interrogation footage and interviews with detectives and family friends, this series will compel you to take a closer look at those living around you. 

Release date: April 10 on Netflix 

Amar Singh Chamkila

Starring Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, the film marks Imtiaz Ali’s streaming directorial debut. It charts the untold story of Punjab’s original rockstar, Amar Singh Chamkila, hailed as the “Elvis Presley of Punjab,” who was the highest record-selling artist of his time. Shot in real locations, the film will transport audiences to the vibrant and rhythmic world of Punjab's folk music, particularly the rustic Akhadaas (live music performances in villages) that were once dominated by Chamkila’s voice. The movie depicts Chamkila's musical journey from the shadows of poverty to the heights of popularity in the '80s, angering many along the way, which ultimately led to his assassination at the young age of 27. The film also stars Parineeti Chopra as Amarjot, Chamkila’s wife and singing partner, while the music was composed by the maestro AR Rahman.

Release date: April 12 on Netflix 

Tiger 

Releasing on this Earth Day, April 22, Tiger is narrated by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and centres on our planet's most revered and charismatic animal. The documentary focuses on the journey of Ambar, a young tigress, raising her cubs amidst the fabled forests of India. Curious, rambunctious, and at times a bit clumsy, the cubs have a lot to learn from their savvy mother who will do all she can to keep them safe from pythons, bears, and marauding male tigers. Directed by Mark Linfield, Tiger is the groundbreaking culmination of 1,500 days of filming.

Release date: April 22 on Disney+ Hotstar 

Boiling Point

Having first released as a film back in 2021, Boiling Point received a host of nominations at the BAFTA Awards and critical acclaim owing to its portrayal of the hospitality industry as it showed the stress and tension of working in a top restaurant, striking the work-life balance, self-harm, and substance abuse. The film ended on a bad note for the restaurant's head chef, Andy Jones (Stephen Graham), as he collapsed on the floor after a heart attack. The series picks up the story eight months later with Jones recovering from surgery and his former sous chef Carly (Vinette Robinson) leading the old team at her trendy restaurant, Point North. 

Release date: April 29 on Netflix
