Here’s how to achieve Daisy Edgar-Jones’ relaxed fringe, according to hairstylists

It is equal parts cool, grown-up, and easy to maintain.

Daisy Edgar-Jones is proving to be summer’s breakout style star. While on the press tour for her latest film, Twisters, it is clear that the 26-year-old actress and her A-list stylist, Dani Michelle, are having a ball showcasing Edgar-Jones’ fashion prowess through ensembles by revered labels such as Schiaparelli, Vivienne Westwood, and Gucci.

“I am really enjoying becoming more sure of what I feel good in and what I want to wear—and Dani is amazing,” Edgar-Jones told Bazaar when we caught up recently in London. “She really can read my mind and she is so good at understanding what I am feeling or wanting; she just knows in essence what is going to work. She always tries to go for the effortless, cool style and that’s what I always want to achieve.”

“Effortless” and “cool” also perfectly describes Edgar-Jones’ hair, as evidenced by the soft, seventies-esque long layers she’s been sporting on the red carpets. While she’s no stranger to being a hair inspiration to many, there’s no denying that her fringe has evolved from its Marianne (of Normal People) days, where it was shorter, more rounded, and with a much more coquettish vibe.

This time around, with the help of the hairstylist Bryce Scarlett (who was also behind Margot Robbie’s perfect Barbie blowouts during the film’s press tour), Edgar-Jones’ fringe takes on a more laissez-faire feel with layered, face-framing pieces styled with plenty of texture.

How to achieve Daisy Edgar-Jones’ fringe

“While she still sports her iconic retro-inspired curtain bangs, they have been blended into her lived-in waves to create a more classic, effortless look without compromising on volume,” says Mihaela Vatafu, a director stylist at Taylor Taylor London’s Shoreditch salon. “This fringe perfectly frames the face, adding movement to Daisy’s hair, and even working to accentuate her cheekbones having been cut right above the cheek.”

To get the look, Vatafu recommends asking your stylist for “curtain bangs that sit just above the cheekbone, with face-framing layers”.

For fringe novices unsure about making the chop, take it slow by getting a longer fringe that you can easily tuck behind your ears.

Your hair colour makes a difference, too. According to Cos Sakkas, esteemed hairdresser and Toni & Guy’s global creative director, “expertly placed highlights around the perimeter of your face, like Daisy’s, illuminate your natural features, drawing attention to the fringe”. He’s a fan of the Toni & Guy Lumi Blush Colour package as “it helps to bring out your best facial features and brighten up the whole look”.

How to maintain the fringe

Curtain bangs are significantly easier to maintain than severe, straight-cut fringes. After washing your hair, Vatafu suggests using your hands to arrange the fringe where you want it to sit. It will help guide the fringe so it looks most natural once it dries.

Since hair grows at different rates for everyone, there’s no prescriptive time frame for trims. “But, as a general rule, we would suggest having a trim every four-to-six weeks to keep it fresh,” offers Vatafu.

How to style the fringe

Prepping with a heat protector is key for shielding against heat damage. “Using a medium round brush and a blow-dryer, work the hair up and away from the face,” suggests Vatafu.

She often reaches for Prepare + Protect from Løre Originals as it contains fatty acids to maintain hair health. “For added texture, I also love the Davines’ This Is A Dry Texturizer. It’s a hybrid between a light hairspray and a dry shampoo with a little added moisture,” she says. It allows for hold, without weighing down finer strands or leaving it feeling crunchy.

If you prefer to air dry, spritz a little texturising spray for added movement and texture, or use a small amount of leave-in conditioner to nourish curly strands.

“A fringe can instantly elevate your style. If you don’t want to lose your length, adding a fringe can change your look,” says Sakkas. For anyone contemplating a hair upgrade this summer, it’s time to consider the DEJ fringe.
